Here are some ideas on how to publicise your event:
Approach a local journalist (especially a the sports journo) and let them know what your club is doing.
Utilise the media releases we have provided for you
GOOD IDEAS FOR STORIES - is the game in memoriam of someone associated with the team? Is there a cancer survivor within the team that the story could highlight, is there any great fundraising activities or ideas that are taking place that will really capture people's attention? Is the opposing team involved and what is their motivation to get involved?
Think about a great photo opportunity with your team that the local paper would hopefully capture (photo ideas - little kids with arms taped up posing like the "big boys" in our national/state posters, if game is in memoriam of some they could hold a photo of that person, a few generations of players associated with the specific team and there may be a cancer survivor involved in this), can there be a great photo opportunity with opposing team that will capture all imagination?
Don't be scared to chase the local media to make sure they follow through with the article/photo.
Invite them along to the game on the day to take some follow up shots or write a follow up article.
Make sure you thank the local media for their support so they are open to doing it again.
Write a letter to the editor to thank the community for their support of the game and report your fundraising efforts.
Keep a copy of the article and photo.
Let the cancer council know of your printed photo/article so they can keep a collection of what is happening.
National Media - before approaching a TV station, radio station or a state or national media outlet PLEASE call the Cancer Council local office so they can be across what you are doing. We have relationships with a lot of these outlets and you may not be aware of things we already have in place.
