With one in two Australian men facing a cancer diagnosis by the age of 85, The Cancer Council NSW is calling on all sportsmen to fight back against their fiercest opponent, cancer, by joining forces in a new fundraising event, Call To Arms.
Call To Arms will see sports clubs across NSW strapping on yellow armbands during their sports matches to raise funds and awareness for men facing cancer.
"Compared to women, Australian men are more likely to be diagnosed with cancer and less likely to survive their diagnosis," Joanne Booth, Metropolitan and Regional Fundraising Manager at The Cancer Council NSW said. "That's why it's crucial for sportsmen from all clubs to band together and help save men's lives."
While Call To Arms is primarily a chance for local sportsmen to rally together to fight cancer, a number of professional sports teams and peak sporting bodies, now including the Parramatta Eels as well have become passionate supporters of the event.
The Parramatta Eels will be supporting the event by wearing yellow armbands during their match with the Raiders on 7 June. Three of the Parramatta Eels sponsors will also be supporting Call To Arms by donating $100 per try.
"Every dollar raised through Call To Arms will help prevent, detect, and treat cancers in men, as well as support men during their times of greatest need," The Cancer Council NSW's Joanne Booth said. "By funding the Cancer Council's research, education and support programs, every man that joins in Call To Arms will help save a life."
