Cancer Information

The facts about cancer

1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer by the time they turn 85.

Around 63,000 Australian men are expected to be diagnosed with cancer this year alone.

Whilst cancer is one of the leading causes of death among Australian men, around one third of all cancers can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices.

Excluding non-melanoma skin cancers, the most common cancers facing men in Australia are prostate, bowel, melanoma and lung cancer. Prostate cancer is more common in men than breast cancer is in women.

Reducing your cancer risk

Healthy lifestyle choices can significantly reduce your cancer risk.

Simple ways you can reduce your cancer risk include:

  • Quitting smoking
  • Eating (and drinking) healthily
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Being physically active
  • Being SunSmart
  • Being aware of any unusual changes and visiting your doctor regularly.

For further information about reducing your cancer risk visit http://www.cancer.org.au/ or call our Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20 (local call cost anywhere in Australia).
